Indeed, I have also made my research but was not able to find any articles mentionning this information. My only source will then be this surgeon himself (he did not directly tell me the name Medvedev,for confidentiality reasons I guess)

However, seeing the article and the fact that he “saves” one of my athlete friend by doing him a succesful mesh revision after a failed Liechtenstein repair, I think it is highly probable he tells the truth.

Moreover,AZ Monica is well-known hospital for surgery. I know that some french surgeons regularly go there to deepen their surgery techniques

There is no mention specifically of Dr. Pauli’s specialty at his practice’s web site. Interesting that someone of Medvedev’s level would see him. There must be word-of-mouth, or a professional network that knows something. Worth adding Dr. Pauli to the list of European surgeons to see. The web site is in Dutch.

Thanks Gullick. I found another paper from the same authors describing the method used, for athletic pubalgia. It shows a suture-based non-mesh repair. It’s an interesting look at the thought processes in 2012. They talk about how mesh was being used at the time but they had some success with the suture-based method.

Dr. Pauli has not published much since then. His practice sites are in a foreign language.

He had its surgery done by S. Pauli (one of the author of this article https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22955404/) in Anvers.

I tried to find something about where Medvedev had his hernia repaired but can’t. It is incredible though how much was written about the fact that he was going to have hernia surgery. Page after page of internet articles about it.

He apparently has made a very fast recovery. Which does not actually tell much. I was playing high level soccer at one month after my mesh implantation. It will be interesting to see how he does in the long term. Dai Greene also was back to training soon after his mesh implantation but had to have the mesh removed eventually. If anyone can find more about the details of Medvedev’s procedure they would be good to know. Thanks for the post William Bryant.

Wow. Medevedev had an inguinal hernia and he played a marathon 5 setter at Wimbledon against Eubanks which he won and got all the way to the Semi-Final. Still number 3, very good stamina on the court, no retirements. He was also out only a couple of months before he went back to full endurance training.
This is really nice to see considering how tennis is a sport with a lot of rapid movements and changes of direction that are very taxing on the core area.

I’d strongly suspect that Dr Towfigh has a lot of experience with celebrity hernias given her location and expertise. I recall reading somewhere Dr Todd Harris in Newport Beach also has had some celebrity patients.

Many professional athletes go to Dr Meyers at Vincera Institute in Philadelphia and Dr Muschawek in Munich Germany, often those are for the ‘sports hernia’ and abdominal or abductor injuries, but both clinics perform true groin hernia repairs as well. Dr Brown in Palo Alto California also sees athletes for sports hernias and patients for regular hernias. The Gilmore Groin clinic in London is another one you see mentioned often relating to soccer injuries. Some of those clinics have autographed memorabilia from their patients.

A web search can reveal several celebrities that have gone to Shouldice in Toronto Canada for the typical groin hernia.

Some notable politicians have had hernia surgeries at George Washington University Hospital in Washington DC.

ESPN and sports news can be a revealing resource for injuries, patients, and their doctors. For those curious, if you go to “news.google.com” and search for “hernia surgery” you’ll find a lot of reports from sports and celebrity gossip sources too.

It’s kind of fun to think about how the elite get treatment and where. But keep in mind that celebrities and pro athletes tend to have the best resources available to them resulting in rapid diagnosis, and almost always get rehab and physical therapy after an injury or surgery. To me this says that rehab and physical therapy would likely benefit everyone, even if you aren’t famous.

But, as you can imagine, HIPAA prevents any of us surgeons to divulge any information about our patients, including whether they had hernia repair, the type, and whether they received mesh.

I know most of those on the list had umbilical hernias, many without mesh. Some had inguinal hernias, with mesh, some laparoscopic and some open.

Can’t be more specific… 😳
