  • Physical exam: index finger entering inguinal canal (is it necessary?)

    Hello, everybody!

I have a quick question. Is it necessary for a GP to enter the inguinal canal with an index finger during the regular physical check-up exam? Since I have mesh on one side, it is painful and uncomfortable, although some GPs have found it interesting that they can “feel” the mesh there.

My hernia surgeon typically only checks the H-Triangle with fingers at the entries to the femoral canal and external/internal inguinal. He says the sticking of the finger inside is only necessary to determine direct-vs.-indirect hernia and since I had surgery, and no re-occurense, there is no point in making that determination.

Still, the GPs think it is necessary to do it because it is in the handbook. Is it necessary?

(I am not talking about the fingers-over-the-canal entries exam, that is fine with me, it is the finger inside the canal exam that I am referring to.)
