you are spot on about these phony tissue repair stats —check this study….shouldice –15 percent recurrance at 10-12 years. A friend just went to a surgeon and asked about mesh vs shouldice…the doc told him if you are active get mesh…this is really about pick your poison…open mesh seems least likely to fail. If shouldice was guaranteed…[Read more]

A lecture by the great Dr. Conze on the way meshes are selected and used…Shocker most patients have no clue what mesh they are getting and its likely its whatever the hospital got the best deal on. Another very troubling point is that lap surgery is a significant risk for incisional hernias…a fact that is never disclosed by lap doctors. I…[Read more]

David…open mesh is very dangerous. Maybe these negative things dont happen frequently but they certainly do happen…and if the do your life ENDS. I think people have to take that into consideration. I have spoked with numerous open mesh patients and most are just fine…though upon closer questioning they admit to feeling the mesh getting…[Read more]

Watchful –is there any clarity at all about which is more risky tissue or mesh? It seems like mesh to me…but maybe i am mistaken. And i dont think complications are rare at all —debilitating issues may be rare —but it seems like everyone that has a hernia repair feels it to some degree. Its just not clear which option is better….mass…[Read more]

David I am really tired of your skepticism and questioning. If you want to direct message me I will give you the names of three individuals you can talk to directly…all great guys —all destroyed by open mesh. They are all willing to discuss their cases. Its not my regular life —its through my research on these issues. But i have spoke…[Read more]

Who are you looking at for open mesh repair. David Chen and British hernia centre seem to be the best options.

thanks…you would be surprised. My friend had open mesh and somehow it merged into his colon. Another guy I know lost his testicles when open mesh had to be removed. And another has been laying in bed for 10 years because his open mesh flipped. I hear you on the problems with tissue repairs. I am at a complete loss of what to do. I have…[Read more]

Can I ask why you are considering open mesh? Many say its the most problematic repair. Yunis says all of his complications are open mesh. Mesh may start out fine and then get infected 5 years down the road –or flip or move into a nerve. Curious to hear your decision making process.

Mike M —thanks for your answer – its the best i will get i suppose..but unlike what Good Intentions implies I am not asking the same question over and over. And I am not suggesting that you should have gone to one of the other named surgeons. My simple point was –other highly respected experts in the field have said the Kang repair is…[Read more]

So one of the issues I discuss with patients is bedside manner- I don’t care how great a doctor is if he doesnt care about the patients – is egotistical and more interested in money than in good outcomes. Some of these assembly line docs really strike me as not caring about the patients much if at all. They are racing through surgeries. If they…[Read more]

Mike M – thanks so much -great analysis as always. I just disagree. The main issue that you ignore is the issue of the opinion of other highly qualified surgeons. These surgeons know way more about hernia surgery than you or I do. All have great credentials. Are well known—lecture around the world etc. Koch Lorenz and Towfigh. All say the…[Read more]

Caught up again with the elusive casimir. Very good guy–chatted about desarda for an hour. Many good insights. Flawed design…injurious to tissue….plenty of horrific pain. Tomas gets a real black eye….i think its case closed on desarda after this chat. Thanks Casimir…a real gentleman

one of the big points about the desarda is that it doesnt leave any foreign body inside you…shouldice some say leaves as much plastic as a piece of mesh when you count all the suturing….but its very difficult to get a grip on the longterm durability of desarda…Mike m says its the weakest of the three major tissue repairs. if you google the…[Read more]

All as i continue my massive due diligence had the chance to speak with several patients of grishkan at length. All said this guy is not nice or courteous at all. Strictly business. Will come out and say you need 120000 dollars. His operating facility at least 3 years ago is in a bad part of town and quite shoddy. Two patients i spoke to say…[Read more]

Was browsing another forum and nearly everyone on that forum was saying dont do open surgery —its painful with long healing times. This was a typical comment among many==there are simply no good answers:
DO SCOPE ONLY!!! Don’t let them cut you old school. My recovery was a bitch. My buddy scoped both sides at once and was out for a walk 3 days…[Read more]
