@pinto, method was using the $20 truss with the pad turned flat side in using it 5-6 hours a day at work, or when doing anything more physical around the house (didn’t use for exercising that I do everyday). Ice packs for about 10 minutes after taking it off, eat well, and when lifting anything don’t lean over and keep it under 20lbs.

@pinto – I’m not sure what is being conflated in the study?
How are tissue and mesh being lumped together under ‘open’ if the categories they used in this study to classify primary repairs included ‘Shouldice’, ‘open mesh’, and ‘open tissue’?
I’m well aware of what an abstract it…and what it is not. My advice stands: If an abstract suggests…[Read more]

@Pinto The reason I am pointing at the “coughing” is I had never experienced even a hint of a hernia at any point in my life. It was the furthest thing I thought possible. However I was forcing myself to cough in a pretty extreme manner over a long period of time (2 months) because I was annoyed by the simple cold / covid remnants. I never got…[Read more]

They are one of (I think) 3 private hospitals in Ontario. These were allowed to continue to operate when new private hospitals were banned in 1971.

Incorrect. He was not playacting on request just for the debate, or anything like that. He heavily pushes mesh as superior (although evidently not when his own body is at stake). Read this:

Voeller chose Shouldice vs open mesh (Lichtenstein). The article mentioned that he didn’t qualify for lap mesh because of a prior procedure. However, he must have still had the choice between open tissue repair and open mesh, and chose the tissue repair which he said was perfect, but not something that could be reproduced in other centers.…[Read more]

I am in South Korea now. I talked to Dr. Kang too regarding mesh removal and think he is definately an option if removing mesh is ultimately the solution. Go see a urologist and collect all the info, documentation, imaging. Stephen will make the hurdles of daily life for a non korean speaker in Seoul a non issue. Dr. Kang’s surgerical…[Read more]

@pinto I can understand your point about a University hospital. The question is: was the patient informed before surgery that it would have been handled by other surgeons, with the occasional supervision of the chief surgeon? The article criticising what had happened described the way the “many surgeries” were handled as not acceptable and I agree…[Read more]

@pinto I play tennis at a light level without running like a madman (like I used to) around the court. When I just go for a run (anything longer than 1 km), I start hurting as soon as I end the run.
I must mention that I also wear a truss or hernia boxers that keep my bits into place, that has been important for me and it allows me to carry…[Read more]

Thanks @pinto! I know Dr. Towfigh and her team have done research and published on the topic of allergy testing for mesh allergies. I don’t think the tests are very reliable and have a high false negative rate. That being said, I had allergy testing before having polypropylene removed and I had a severe skin reaction. I also reacted to the h…[Read more]

@ alephy the doctors are often good surgeons but the advice they give is often not aligned to the latest research on chronic pain and the advantages of non-mesh surgery. In UK NHS can not offer a non-mesh inguinal repair so the doctors would say anything to make you stop thinking about it.
@holeinthewall , you are right. I am searching for the…[Read more]

@pinto I didn’t have a hernia at any point I had some overuse tearing in my groin as a professional dancer – and the one big surgery I got bilaterally was through Dr. Brown and his ”sports hernia repair”. The reason I’m so messed up is because he does his own made-up procedure which is a mix of shouldice & desarda (so a mix of 2 hernia…[Read more]

Thank you both for your kind responses and follow up. I’m sorry I didn’t respond to either of you sooner. I’d just like to summarise what you’ve said, based on your replies:
1. While (possibly) an extreme measure, going to a surgeon who does pure tissue repairs (such as Dr. Kang/Brown/colleagues) is a good step to…[Read more]

Interesting analysis by @pinto. The active/passive grammar probably does offer clues into the psychology, perhaps at an unconscious level. I don’t want to be too presumptuous, but the mere existence of this article seems like a tacit admission that there is a problem with the mesh-for-all approach to hernia repair.
Certainly, it is not so benign…[Read more]

I’d describe my lifestyle as quite active. I play sports occasionally, and I used to do heavy weightlifting 3 times a week prior to COVID.
After the Shouldice surgery, I was always worried about lifting heavy due to a fear of causing damage to the surgical site (kind of psychological I guess). However, after some time, I got the…[Read more]
