Post-Surgery Pain Management Questions
Hi all,
A few questions have been pinging around in my brain as I prepare for my surgery January 6. If anyone can help me understand more on these I’d appreciate it!
1 – My surgeon will be using Exparel during the operation for localized pain relief that should last up to three days post surgery. Has anyone here had experience with this pain relief option? I’m cautiously optimistic, but haven’t read anything here about anyone else having used it.
2 – After breaking my leg last year I learned that hydrocodone does not help pain at all for me, but that aleve was a lifesaver. However, since then I have been told by my primary care doc to avoid nsaids as my kidney function is on the very edge of normal with respect to protein/creatinine ratio (basically I fall within normal bounds, but just barely). Not being able to use aleve has me really worried, as Tylenol does not help pain for me either. After my tubal ligation I was given oxycodone which sort of helped, but again, aleve was infinitely more effective then as well. For those patients where nsaids are contraindicated, what do docs usually recommend for pain management post op?
Thanks in advance for any info. I will definitely be keeping many ice packs handy, and will make every effort to be walking whenever it’s possible. Just trying to prepare as best as I can 🙂
