I got the hernia like 4yrs ago and have had gut issues IBS-C, SIBO etc. Been to hernia specialists twice, two different ones. They said the hernia was small and I could simply do “watchful waiting” or whatever it’s called and leave it be. They claimed my gut issues are unrelated but in the back of my mind I feel it must be this hernia messing with my motility, which in turn causes my SIBO and everything else. I am pretty sure I will go ahead and get a repair done but would still like others opinions on this matter.

Also, I decided not to have a repair over mesh and hearing many mesh horror stories, however in my country there are no non-mesh methods. I see there is a mesh that fully dissolves but the last specialist thought I would be a fool to use it (not his exact words but I got that vibe from him) claiming I would end up having a recurrence. I am pretty sure I will do an open repair because I believe the mesh could be much smaller amount and I work from home so can recover without any major issues.

I’ve gone from “no way am I getting mesh” to now at my wits end with these gut problems. I feel like I must get the repair done and see if my gut returns to normal. Before my hernia I had an iron gut never once had an issue.

    Thanks for any advice!!

The body may react to a hernia with slowing of the intestine. It is not a well studied concept but I see it at times.

inguinal hernia right side, motility SIBO issues?

Thanks for the info, I will keep investigating and searching. Can you confirm for me that an inguinal hernia in some cases (even rare cases) could hinder gut motility? For example pre-hernia my entire life 1-2 type4 movements a day, after the hernia slow motility as such nearly always type1 every day. If I take 700-1500mg magnesium oxide per day I can end up with type4 movement every day. I have a strange theory that the kink from the hernia allows only small amounts of stool through at a time and slows everything down resulting in ‘rocks’ at the end, but when enough magox is used to soften the stool it can flow more freely through the kink and manage a type4. I suspect I will not be able to prove anything until I have the repair and see what happens. Keep in mind slow gut motility is an underlying cause of SIBO, the treatment Rifaxamin is followed with a prokinetic so the sibo does not return. Thanks again

    Thanks for posting.

I highly recommend you Search this site for more answers. (Search button below).

    In short:

    – All countries offer non-mesh hernia repair. Perhaps you need to find another surgeon who performs it.

    – Smaller piece of mesh is worse than larger piece of mesh. It will cause a recurrence, which can complicate your future.

    – Hernias can cause IBS-type symptoms. It would not cause SIBO, however. That is a bacterial issue.

    – Mesh that is fully absorbable will most likely result in a hernia recurrence.
