Mesh surgery and subsequent withdraw from market of the mesh type?
This is another concern I have: you get a mesh, all goes fine, but then your mesh type is withdrawn from the market for potential problems…what do you do?
Will you actually be contacted by somebody, or you have to regularly check the agencies web sites for information on your mesh…
and who pays if the mesh is to be removed?? The hospital? the manufacturer? I know for a fact that here in Switzerland the health insurance pays but you are expect to pay the first 1k to 3k dollars (depending on the insurance type)….not everybody can afford this (and it is not their fault!) -

Mesh recalls to date, with two exceptions, have been for problems of packaging and other things unrelated to safety of the mesh.
for the Composix mesh, it was recalled because of risk of breakage and intestinal injury. No patient was required to have the mesh prophylactically removed. For the Physiomesh, there was a higher recurrence rate when used as a bridging method and so it was removed from the market. Again, no mesh required prophylactic removal.
