• 17 days post-op. Help with recovery symptoms?

Hi, I’m relatively new to the board. I had some crazy nerve pain for a few days following me surgery that I posted about. Thankfully it went away about 5 days after surgery.

My surgery was 17 days ago, for a direct inguinal hernia — open repair with mesh — plus a torn oblique and transversalis, and the iliohypogastric nerve was caught up in it. I’m addition to addressing the hernia and muscles, the doctor cut out a section of the iliohypogastric nerve. And cauterized the ends.

17 days later, the main issues I’m still experiencing are:
— right testicle is still hanging low and is swollen
— skin numbness in much of the region.
— general soreness when I wear pants or a belt that hits the region.
— skin over-sensitivity — almost feels like a sunburn in a few spots (top of the leg, next to base of the penis, couple other select spots, etc.)

Since I’m expecting the soreness, I think the sunburn sort of feeling has been the most frustrating so far. Anyone familiar with recovery involving the resecting of a portion of the iliohypogastric? Is this sunburn sort of feeling normal during recovery?

Thanks again for your help!!!

Dear Kevin B.
Do not hesitate to ask your surgeon any questions or concerns that you have.
Your recovery will be better if you know what is going on and what to expect.
Sitting at home and worrying is not helpful. Get the information you need

Thanks so much, DrBrown! Super helpful tips.
It’s been a bit of a roller coaster with a DVT clot & urinary retention. The testicle seems to be improving, though it’s still swollen.
I think I’m just paranoid about the skin pain. I know I probably just need to be patient, but my surgeon has been very low-key and didn’t really give me a heads up about some of these symptoms.
Just trying to make sure the skin thing isn’t a totally unusual problem.
Really appreciate your input!

Dear Kevin b.
Many of the symptoms your describe are related to neuretomy. In most cases this will improve with time.
Dry the skin after your shower and apply baby powder. Occasionally lidocaine or capsaicin cream will help (available OTC) A nerve block can help.
The testicle should improve with time.
Work with your surgeon, he/she should also be able to give advice.
Regards
