I am a 31 years old (male) who had bilateral inguinal (indirect) hernia repair w/ mesh in 2014. Recently, a doctor recommended mesh removal. Here is my story.

A few months ago (December), I started an intense stair running routine (mistake).

One night, after 2 weeks of running stairs, I was lounging on the couch. I crossed my legs and felt a ripping sensation right near my pubic bone. It was alarming and I was scared to move. It didn’t hurt, but I called off the exercise for a while.

A few weeks later, I did a light workout. The next morning, pain began. It hurt to touch right above my pubic bone, and it hurt to cough. I felt like I had a recurrence. To my surprise, local docs couldn’t find anything. After 2 weeks it no longer hurt to touch, but spasming became almost non-stop, and I would get sharp pains when initiating movement.

It has now been 4.5 months. I have had a CT scan and two MRI’s. My second MRI showed a moderate amount of fluid near the pubic bone, but otherwise, nothing definitive.

Even as I type this out I am having spasms. They are just never ending. Sharp pains still happen intermittently with initiating motion, leaning, starting to walk, etc. It can also hurt to compress my belly, i.e, holding my 1 year old son or even hugging my wife after work.

A Dr. recently recommended mesh removal. I am considering it because the spasms and sharp pains have been such a drag on me for so many months now, but I am also bit hesitant to sign up for the removal since it sounds like he almost recommended it on a whim. Is it possible to do something less extreme, i.e, diagnostic laproscopic exam? Something to try to find the true source of pain before I get the mesh cut out of me?

If you were fine since 2014 until recently, then usually mesh removal is not the answer. Most mesh based pain occurs in the first year. Anything later is either a recurrence or something else not hernia related. Perhaps you have a sports strain.

Of course, I’m surmising based on the information you gave me. I would need more information to be able to definitively help treat your specific problem. But it’s not common to need mesh removal this many years later.
