An Ask for ALL, including surgeons
Hello All – I have a asymptomatic direct inguinal hernia and I may have to get surgery eventually. I found a good doc and will be getting a consult soon to see what my options are. Are there any success stories with mesh? I’m currently worried about having to get surgery with mesh and feel like all I ever read is bad stories. What are the percentages/data of people getting an implant and not ever (and I mean long term 10,15+ years) having issues? I’m terrified and it’s causing me a ton of anxiety in the fact that it’s basically the only option these days. Thanks!!

Thanks agian for your responses! The doctor I found has performed thousands of laprocopic hernia procedures (and again was on the AHS website). If you have some recommendations in surrounding states, please post them here so I can research (please and thanks!). Additionally, are there certain questions you would ask the surgeon to get a good vibe on how well the surgery typically goes for their patients?

I don’t personally know of any surgeons in Colorado. Those listed on the AHS website have an interest in hernias. They are not necessarily hernia specialists, but the majority of them have enough of an interest to have good experience in hernias and seek to educate themselves in hernia-related topics and procedures.

Thanks, Dr. Towfigh. I checkd the AHS website and searched for a doctor in my area (Colorado). If the doctor is listed when you search for a surgeon, are they considered a good option? Specifically, are there any doctors you would reccommend in Colorado?

I appreciate that there are a lot of patients that have had adverse outcomes after inguinal hernia repair. That said, statistically, that % is low. At 15+ years, the expected complications from hernia repair is 1-5% recurrence rate and less than 5% chronic pain. I hope this give you some relief.
That said, the best outcomes are from those who perform the most repairs. So, pick your surgeon wisely.
