  • Any exercises, supplements, or other things to prevent groin hernias?

As I wait to speak with a surgeon about my bilateral inguinal hernia, been reading all kinds of horror stories about people having recurrent hernias, needing to have the same hernia fixed multiple times, and in short going under the knife again and again. So, what are some things I can do to not aggravate the hernia that I have until the surgery is scheduled, and to prevent future hernias?

For example, somebody suggested that having a hernia surgery itself might weaken the abdominal walls and make another hernia more likely, though they did not cite any research. So I tried doing abdominal exercises, like bicycle crunches (along with other core strength exercises), but then some people said that abdominal exercises like that will make it worse, just as the pressure from a bowel movement can, for someone with constipation.

So I don’t know anymore. I mean if the problem is a weak abdominal wall, should we not make it stronger? Otherwise, if we fix one area, then the next weakest point is where the next hernia will occur and on and on. And what about other things, like supplements, stretches, posture, lifting techniques, or other things that can help prevent the need to go under the knife again.

Hoping that everything goes well for you. Below is my very positive experience. I would be hesitant to try the exercise if I had a mesh in.

Two years ago I had surgery done by Dr Kang on my right inguinal hernia which went very well. About ten months ago I started to get a sharp pain on my left side which eventually hurt every time I walked up one flight of stairs which was daily and whenever I carried a 45 pound weight into the house about three times a week. After my experience and progression of the hernia on the right side I was sure I was going to get a surgery on my left side.

About five months ago I bought a cheap spring trampoline and about two months ago I came across the abdominal exercise that I am linking below and after doing the exercise on the trampoline for about one month the pain on my left side went away and I only get an occasional burning and/or pain in the same spot that goes away. This sometimes happens when I move and especially if I twist my mid section but it’s only once in a while. I also am able to carry the 45 pound weight with one hand a lot easier.

The exercises consists of bouncing while sitting on the mat with your feet on the floor. You tilt back and bounce. In the beginning, just like the guy says, I could only bounce with my hands on the mat. After five days I was able to bounce with my hands up and after two weeks with one leg up and after two months which was a few days ago I was able to bounce with both legs up. For the first two weeks I was doing it daily and then about three times a week.

The discussion on the exercise, hernia and core strengthening starts at 44:00 and lasts six minutes. I had tried the core strengthening exercise standing up that he shows at about minute 50 but that didn’t work for me. I also found out that I can do the same exercise on a spring mattress with my feet on the bed so you don’t even need to buy a trampoline to do it. His trampoline starts at $600.
