  • Any female no-mesh hernia repair recovery experiences?

I’m trying to plan out the next few weeks after my no-mesh hernia repair on Tuesday (29th). I’ve tried searching on here but I don’t see a ton of experiences that mirror mine. Lots of posts from mesh repairs, mesh removal with no-mesh repairs at the same time, and men. I’m a stay-at-home-mom (37 years old) and I’m most worried about not being able to drive for a few days, which is why I’ve probably put this surgery off for 14 years! I have 2 kids, at 2 different schools, and spend about 2 hours a day driving just doing school drop off and pick ups alone. Plus driving them to their activities after school (my oldest has an activity that is a 90 minute drive round trip just to drop him off due to LA traffic). The doctor says I’ll be able to drive after 3 days, but how realistic is that? I have arranged help from lots of other moms in getting my kids to and from school the rest of the week after surgery (Tues afternoon through Friday), but I’m not sure if I’ll still need help the following week? And what can I expect pain wise? I do think I have a pretty high pain tolerance as I’ve had 2 unmedicated births without issue and meningitis in college. So far, nothing has come close to the pain of a meningitis headache. I have never had an open surgery, just a laproscopic fibroid and endometrioma removal 2 yeas ago.

So today (1/29) was my no-mesh inguinal hernia repair with Dr. Robert Burns in Newport Beach. He uses the Desarda method. Surgery went smoothly and I feel ok for now (8 hours after surgery), probably because of the meds! We’ll see how I feel in the morning! Unfortunately, they found a tumor IN my hernia! WTH?!? They got it all out and are sending it to pathology. I should find out more at my follow-up appointment next week, unless they call me sooner. I was half out of it when Dr. Burns was explaining it to me, but apparently the hard lump I was feeling was mostly tumor, not hernia! All I asked in my foggy haze was if it was common, and they said no. Gotta keep it interesting around here I guess! Fingers crossed for good news.

    I am a female and had a no-mesh repair on September 7, 2018.
Although my open surgery was for a ventral hernia with an umbilical component
I hope my post-operative experience can be of help.

The day of my surgery and first few days afterwards my pain level was tolerable.
I took it easy and was careful with my movements.
I slept quite a bit the first 3 days.
My doctor had prescribed Motrin and Gabapentin for my pain management.
I believe the Gabapentin (600 mg 3x’s a day for first 5 days) contributed to my drowsiness.

This is from my doctor’s website / general Hernia FAQs section
    When Can I drive?
You can drive one week after surgery if you are off of narcotics and have minimal pain.”

Wishing you all the best and a speedy recovery!
Please let us know how you are doing post-operation.

It’s appears to be an inguinal hernia, but he said they won’t know 100% until they’re inside. My goal had been to have surgery over winter or summer break, but I couldn’t get everything figured out by winter break and I definitely can’t wait till summer since it’s now incarcerated.

So I don’t have answers but will be curious about your experience because I’m female and wondering the same thing. I teach, have an inguinal hernia and wonder if spring break will be enough time for me to have surgery and get back in the classroom. Is your hernia inguinal?
