Bromelain – Is it safe to take before/after surgery? Does it work with food?
Is bromelain only safely taken around surgery if being taken with food, significantly reducing the absorption of the bromelain, since with food it is “used up” aiding with protein digestion?
Could it
be dangerous if taken outside of meals, increasing absorption? There are warnings about taking Bromelain before or after surgery because of reduced platelet aggregation & enhanced fibrinolysis (i.e. blood thinning, anti-clotting).
Bromelain is part of Dr. Towfeigh’s published protocol – 500mg twice a day with food. I am certain she feels it is safe as dosed in this way. I am not sure how much of the bromelain survives this type of dosing. It may not have as much effect on inflammation & pain relief when taken in this way, but it may be safer.
40% of Bromelain survives oral intake (I believe this was based on empty stomach dosing, but it is unclear): https://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/26/17/8347/xml
