Various HT members have shared stories of failed medical treatment. A common aspect of these stories is that the patient feels nearly ashamed for having chosen the particular treatment. They think they either succumbed to false promises by the medical service or they did insufficient do-diligence. On the contrary I think they likely were simply unlucky, for medical choices can be quite complex as many of us have found out. Most people would probably have made the same choices.

To help these patients more easily forgive themselves, I want to share a publicly found patient-story by @Good intentions, which is about the greatest “slam dunk” medical decision I’ve heard. My apology in advance if I mistake the details.

You see, he had a tragic outcome of surgery by a surgeon who worked at the same hospital as GI’s doctor friend. GI’s friend recommended the surgeon, a recommendation few would ever dismiss. Your friend, a doctor, is an insider at the same hospital of apparently an accomplished surgeon? Could there ever be a more trustworthy recommendation than that? It’s a slam dunk. Yet it failed. You can study hernia surgery for a hundred years but it will always be incomplete. Let GI’s story tell you that a slam dunk does not always get the win. (Our thanks to GI for his sharing.)
