Funny noise.. crepitus?
Posted by Ashah2574 on June 24, 2017 at 1:03 amhi guys I’m a male 42, overweight, 4 months post op for a 3rd ventral hernia surgery. My hernia was huge (cantaloupe size) and I have a lot of hard scar tissue that’s beginning to soften up. My question is when I push very superficially on the area of the softened up scar tissue I hear a crunchy sound. When I use all my fingers to try to push in nothing “reduces”.. just wondering what that this crunchy sound is.

Here is a small collage of my hernia. The first 3 are pics before surgery. The one with gauze is a week after surgery, and the last one is 3 months after surgery. I started to play some tennis recently but stopped as it was causing some discomfort

I would still consider looking at some sort of dynamic imaging to rule out recurrence. That would be the most definitive route.
Ventral hernias can be repaired with all sorts of weights of mesh. The larger the defect, the higher the recommended weight/density of the mesh.

Also I read somewhere that most specialists are now using medium weight mesh for ventral hernias is this correct?

Hi Dr. thank you for your reply. Yes ventral-light mesh was used. Im in Okinawa. Do u have any recommendations for surgeons here? I had a thought that it might be a reoccurance but I can’t find any actual defect. There is a slight BUlge/swelling that still remains but this area was hard as a rock before and now has softened up. This is the area that makes the noise when I press on it.

For a ventral hernia repair, I assume mesh was used? The sound may be related to the mesh. It can also be a recurrence. Have you considered seeing a surgeon locally in Japan?

Hi thanks for your comment. I just keep worrying about a reoccurance. I did start playing tennis recently. I do still have a seroma still and have a golf ball sized hardened tissue of some sort inside of it. But this crunchy/popping feeling is on my left side (seroma and repaired hernia on right side of midline abdomen) I push on the area that’s popping but the swelling doesn’t reduce. I live in Okinawa Japan so I’ll have to wait till august to see the surgeon at dr goodyears office

Maybe you are still healing and hearing some of the swelling when you press down. Have you had it checked? Do you think you are forming an infection?

My 3 surgeries were lap, open, open. Open ones were done at dr goodyears office in pa.
