Help with umbilical hernia
hi, I found this board because I’ve been looking for answers to abdominal pain issues. The pain got really bad about a month ago and I ended up at the hospital and after a ct scan they said I have an 1.8 cm umbilical hernia. I still have pain and I’ve been to see two doctors. One offered an open repair with mesh. He said the hernia looked enflamed, possibly from my previous laparoscopy to remove pelvic adhesions or from pregnancy. The other said that he would try to close it without mesh but if mesh is needed he would use a semi-absorbable propylene mesh. I’m thinking that I should schedule surgery with the second doctor but I’m also trying to figure out if I should continue looking for someone else? Both doctors said this is really straight forward and they have done hundreds of them. I’m in NYC. Any advice appreciated. Also any tips on preparing or recovery as well. I’m in a lot of pain so I’m afraid my recovery will be more difficult than others.

Dear Diane1255.
If you are skinny, then a 1.8cm Umbilical Hernia can be closed without mesh.
So if you are comfortable with the second surgeon, pick him or her.
