Hernia
Hello,
I had an emergency sigmoid colectomy and colostomy after a diverticulitis attack. Five months later, I had Hartmann’s reversal of the colostomy, and my large intestine was disconnected from the splenic flexure to allow enough “slack” to reconnect to the rectum. I have developed a hernis that is 7cm transverse over a length of 10 cm with a portion of the transvers colon that is 4cm AP dimension. I am 69, 5’2″ and 100 pounds, do yoga and walk a couple of miles per day. I am a full-time caregiver to my husband, who is over 225 pounds and needs a lot of assistance.
The surgeon proposed an open surgery with biologic mesh to bring my rectus muscles back toward center. I wouldn’t describe my symptoms as pain, as much as constant discomfort, as I look like I am 4 months pregnant, and feel the pull starting from my upper rib cage and feel the fullness occupying the space between my bust and pelvis. I have a very short torso. Should I delay surgery until symptoms include pain, or should I get this fixed before it becomes larger?
