An ultrasound has shown a “likely small reducible fat-containing inguinal hernia” on my right side, in the same are where I have a fairly sizable (8 cm) fibroid. I have had pain in the area for the last 15 months, including burning that worsens with exercise, sharp pains upon leaning over, and general crampiness. The area hurts for days and days after pressure is applied.

    I have two questions:
    (1) Could the fibroid have caused the hernia? I don’t want to fix the hernia and just get another one because the fibroid is pressing on the area.
    (2) Is there any way to tell what is causing the pain? My doctor doesn’t think the hernia could be causing the pain because it is so small, but articles I’ve read suggest that a tiny hernia can cause significant pain.

I don’t want to get surgeries I don’t need, particularly a myomectomy or a hysterectomy. Any advice is appreciated.

    1. Fibroids do not cause hernias or in any way affect hernias
    2. Seek a hernia surgeon to help determine if your symptoms are related to a hernia. Sounds like they may be.
