I will check out Shouldice for sure. In case I need to look elsewhere, are there other surgeons in Toronto that do non-mesh repair??

What kind of hernia do you have the Shoudice hospital just outside Toronto ..just call them and they will answer your questions ..they do not remove mesh ..but they do you it ..they do the tissue repair
There is no Hernia specialist in Ottawa
Hernia repair is done in the hospitals by a general surgeon we’re they use plastic mesh …l don’t knew if any other parts of Canada ..that repairs hernias without mesh .The Canadian hernia society states that plastic mesh is the gold standard of care

Hi Lisa. You might try contacting the Canadian Hernia Society. Their directory is open only to members, but perhaps a call or email requesting a few contacts would work. Their Executive Board includes Dr. Peter Glen, MD FRCSC; Ottawa, ON. MarkT’s advice regarding a free consult with the Shouldice also makes sense if you can afford it (you could also ask the consulting surgeon to suggest a few names near Ottawa/Montreal).

Depending upon the type and nature of your hernia, and your own characteristics (health, BMI, etc.), I would highly recommended a free consult at Shouldice Hospital, where surgeons specialize exclusively on the Shoudlice tissue repair.

It seems that in Ottawa or Montreal you will otherwise likely be looking at an open or laparoscopic mesh repair by a general surgeon in a public hospital or private clinic, who by comparison would do far fewer hernia repairs (which is not to say none of them are any good – just that finding a hernia specialist is the ideal).

I’m not aware of any ‘hernia-only’ specialists in Montreal or Ottawa, but perhaps someone will chime in if they have more info.
