  • How do doctors or hospitals choose a mesh?

As in the subject I am wondering how doctors decide to start using a certain mesh type….say the ultimate mesh was presented: how long would it take for doctors to adopt it?

It’s interesting that no doctor commented on this…🤔

From what I gather unfortunately it seems more about cost (hospitals buy in bulk) or driven by doctors that are paid by mesh manufacturers. Sadly many of the top hernia doctors in the US are paid spokespeople for specific mesh devices.

This is something I have wondered also. Is it based on a relationship with a company, cost considerations or what works well for the majority of patients?

My doctor said he uses “lightweight mesh“ and played down any concerns or considerations of other varieties.
