I’m a middle-aged man with 19.5 BMI who noticed a left groin bulge. It was incompetently diagnosed, PCP’s office sending me to the ER and then follow-up with her, neither time the bulge being identified even though it should have been as simple, I now know, as coughing or Valsalva with a medical professional touching it. I had to wait for an ultrasound. It says in MyChart “Small fat-containing left inguinal hernia. … Trace of fluid also noted within the hernial sac.” (Without defining size in mm.)

Reading up on hernias, I ask for a referral to surgery. My referral got sent to a surgeon with around 25 years experience who offered open repair but only performs “a couple a month” of this specific surgery. Wary of this, I have a consultation with Dr. J. Scott Roth but it’s scheduled way out on August 20 unless I get a phone call because I asked to be added to his cancelation list.

Is there a good alternative to just waiting for Dr. Roth? I had plans to be a stay-at-home dad alone with a toddler and infant all day when my wife has to go back to work September 18. I can tell that Dr. Roth cares about how well hernia patients recover based on finding what his peer-reviewed articles are about (even if the groin isn’t his specialty), but I don’t want to incarcerate or strangulate my hernia, or make it bigger and therefore harder to repair, by lifting a 34 pound toddler, pushing a heavy stroller, etc.

Yes, I bought a truss as soon as I was medically advised to do so.
