  • Mesh recall…

Hello all, I had posted a few days ago about mesh removal (thank you to all who replied). I am five weeks post-op for an umbilical hernia repair, laparoscopic with mesh. Recovery is going okay, still a good amount of swelling but it’s going away day by day.

To add to my worrying nightmare of having mesh in me, I just obtained my surgical report and found out that mesh used for me has been recalled. It’s the double layered Atrium C-QUR mesh. The side facing the abdominal is the polypropylene and the side facing the intestines is this Serpafilm like material that’s coated with Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Apparently, there’s a high chance of infection due to that and it has since been recalled, but still being sold? Not sure how that works. I really wish I could go back and I wish the surgeon who performed my surgery would’ve laid out my options for repair and inform on the them instead of just telling me what he was going to do.

Was just curious if this is a reason for mesh removal? And has anyone ever had experience with this type of mesh?

Any information would help, thank you.

Some reacted in an inflammatory way to the fish oil. Sounds like you’re doing fine. And please read websites not funded by trial lawyers. 🙂

Thank you for the reply and the information Dr. Towfigh, does bring a lot of worry down knowing a lot of surgeons use the mesh. I guess I forgot to note that most sites that were saying the mesh itself caused infection were the law sites, they all seemed pretty identical as well…

I guess the reaction of those who were affected just had a bad reaction to mesh in general. Time will tell but thankfully all is well right now.

    You can’t sell recalled mesh.
Some CQur lots were recalled at one point because the packaging was defective, causing the coating on the mesh to dissociate from the mesh itself in high humidity.
The mesh is being used by many surgeons.

If you’re doing fine, do not worry about it.

also, on a separate note, a recall is not an indication for mesh removal.
