  • Nuck cyst diagnosed. Possible hernia?

Hello. My first post. Several months ago I noticed a lump in my inguinal area. An ultrasound (with valsalva) showed a cyst (5x3cm) in the subcutaneous tissue (no internal flow and no penetration below the subcutaneous tissue) and no evidence of inguinal hernia. My surgeon diagnosed it as a Nuck cyst but thinks there is still a possibility of a hernia. I’m scheduled for an open procedure to remove the cyst. He agreed to not use any mesh. He said he would use a prolene suture, just a few stitches. When I asked about using absorbable suture instead he said he would do it but warned it would be a much weaker fix if there is a hernia, but ultimately my choice. I would prefer absorbable suture because I want to avoid foreign material in my body long term. But I am worried about recurrence if there is indeed a hernia. How accurate are ultrasound results that show no hernia when done with valsalva? If there is no hernia and just a Nuck cyst, would the choice of suture type matter, e.g, would using absorbable sutures in removal of the cyst result in a higher risk of recurrence of another cyst? Any insights or other info would be appreciated. I am a healthy 40 yr female. Surgery is in a few days and I am conflicted about which kind of suture to choose. Thanks for reading!

A Nuck cyst will sometimes communicate with the peritoneal cavity.
The amount of suture used is minimal. The chances for a foreign body reaction are minimal.
Prolene or a long-lasting absorbable suture are both excellent choices.
