I have had 2 hernia repairs. The first (20 years ago) was an inguinal open repair with a plug and patch mesh. The second (2 years ago) was a femoral robotic assisted laparoscopic repair with a large 3Dmax mesh. During the second repair the surgeon was inable to remove the plug and patch because he said that it was “well incorporated and vascular”. I have just recently had an ultrasound with color Doppler because of persistent pain and discomfort in the area of previous repairs. The report states that there is a “fat containing inguinal hernia” present. My question is, is it possible the doctor could be seeing the vascular incorporated mesh from the the earlier repair? Also, what is the best imaging for confirmation?

    Dear Christina.
The three most common sources of pain after mesh hernia repair are:
    Recurrent hernia or missed hernia.
Scarring and fibrosis of the mesh.
Or, damage to one of the local nerves.
