  • The Elusive 4-layer Shouldice?

Do any surgeons still do a true 4-layer Shouldice repair, where there are 4 lines of sutures (2 sets of 2 lines of continuous sutures), as described in Glassow: 1973? (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1941165/pdf/canmedaj01661-0043.pdf) Or do modern 4-layer Shouldice repairs always count the 4th layer as the closing of the external oblique aponeurosis? Thanks to anyone who can chime in. Moving beyond the 2-layer vs. 4-layer question I’m finding there’s a lot more to unpack.

Shouldice is 4 layers. I’m not aware of surgeons doing it differently.
