  • Use of Titanium Tacks – pain & removal

I had a bilingual hernia repair a number of years ago. Surgeon used full mesh with about 15 + titanium tacks to hold mesh in place. I had no problems for 3-4 years afterward until I tried repeatedly pulling on lawnmower starter. Developed severe pain on right side which went away as long is did no physical lifting, pulling, etc. Surgeon said pain was due to inflammation caused by the tacks. He could maybe remove some tacks but no certainty this would work. I went to a pain specialist who did a ablation of the nerve in in the area of pain. This provided little relief. Could this be torn /injured muscle – MRI showed nothing. Head of Surgery at UPMC in Pittsburgh said it was a physical(?) issue.
Appreciate an insight, thoughts on my problem. Thanks Dave Bernard

    Dear Dave.
The most commons causes of pain are:
    Recurrent hernia
Scarring and fibrosis of the mesh.
Damage to one of the local nerves or to the spermatic cord.

Since the nerve ablation was not helpful, then it is probably one of the other two.
