Waves of testicle pain after bi-lateral indirect inguinal hernia repair
Hi, this is my first post in the forum and I had laparoscopic TEP surgery for bilateral indirect inguinal hernias with mesh 7 days ago. I’ve also had a total colectomy and jpouch creation for severe ulcerative colitis 9 years ago, by the same surgeon. I’m actually doing quite well overall after the surgery, the soreness at my keyhole sites is almost gone and I have been walking a lot each day and am off my pain meds. I was not however prepared for the amount of testicle pain I would experience, or the bruising that followed the surgery. I’m not as worried about the discoloration from blood pooling, but I am experiencing quite a bit of pain and would like to know if this is normal. The pain comes in waves, usually when I switch positions and it feels like someone has placed a rubber band around either or both of my testicles, but on the inside of my body. The pain is much much worse at night. I wake up about once an hour with this pain, I’ll roll over get an intense wave of pain for a couple of minutes and then it will subside if I don’t shift again. It’s more prominent on the right side. My hernia was on my left side but the surgeon checked for a second, found a defect and repaired the right side too. I stated experiencing this hernia pain about 10 years ago (it was probably more but I had such severe pain for Ulcerative Colitis that I probably conflated the two) and it became constant and was affecting my bladder. The good news is that hernia pain is gone and my bladder is much better, but I would like to know if this pain is normal for the healing process and how long I should expect it to last, as I have not really seen much improvement yet. Is the pain around the mesh as the swelling goes down and the implant heals against the abdominal wall? When I had surgery to fix my broken ankle and pins placed the implants hurt for about 6 months. My my surgeon feels it’s normal and showed me how the mesh surrounds the spermatic cord but I’m concerned it permanent. This pain is very hard to cope with.
