Been living with hernia for several years with little impact. Talked w/ a hernia surgeon last year told me if not impacting life greatly, leave it be. Getting larger now and I got a bit of a scare yesterday after lifting very heavy. Was anxious about the weight, but form was spot on and had no issues. Hours later though, large bulge came out. I put it back and heard lots of gurgling. That was new. Then did the worst thing and turned to internet where seems every link told me I was at risk of imminent death.

Played phone tag with a hernia surgeon today and am looking at three no insurance cash surgery centers in Maryland, Oklahoma and Nevada and just starting to look at Euro places.

Questions, has anyone used any of these no insurance surgery centers, what was your experience? Not sure if I am able to name doctors here. Anyone have a success story traveling out of US.

Also, if anyone is very fit or a trainer or coach, what was your experience/ time table like for resuming regular activity. I train with kettlebells 3-4 hours/ week, swim, sprint and teach a a variety of yoga classes. Besides not wanting to give that up, I also rely on it for another form of income. If I am not teaching, I am not getting paid.

I am resigned to getting this done now. Reading up on mesh or no mesh, so would welcome your experiences there and will read more of the forum. One Dr in Nevada very anti mesh, one in MD uses it. Wasn’t clear about OK center. I feel like this should be a routine thing for a surgeon who has done thousands of these, but the post op problems I have been reading about have me scared half to death. Appreciate finding this forum and seeing not all horrible news.

    quote Good intentions:

You can name names. Nevada is probably Dr. Petersen.

Don’t overlook Dr. Brown in California. Don’t overlook the Shouldice Hospital in Canada.

Also don’t overlook that you can always do mesh if a “pure” repair fails. But you can’t go back from a mesh repair. The effects are permanent and last a lifetime.

Can you tell me how much do they charge at Shouldice for a unilateral hernia repair (otherwise sound person), all inclusive?

The recurrence rate for indirect hernias repaired with or without mesh is the same.
Since the recurrence rate is the same, strongly consider a pure tissue repair.

I live in Oklahoma and know the surgery center of OK. They will use standard mesh but they do offer a cash price. I got an indirect hernia repaired with plug and patch mesh. I am 32 and it has ruined me. I am very thin. Over six foot and 150. Get the mesh if you are open to the idea of giving up physical activities. Trust me it is a very real thing when you realize you are in your prime and you can’t even mow your own yard. If you value your activities and it sounds like you do I would take a conservative approach and try no mesh first.

TY for the reply, Dr Brown. It is indirect. It still feels odd to say because I was overweight or yo-yo-ing for many years but I have been skinny since 2010. I have some left over skin in lower ab area if that matters for cutting, but low body fat.

I was already leaning to no mesh because now that I am healthy, don’t like the idea of a foreign body in me for what is hopefully decades and in reading about Desarda said they use the oblique. Mine are fairly strong so that sounded appealing. I did not know my combination increased risk of post surgery pain, so TY for that information. I am going to keep reading and learning but I am committed to acting fairly soon, hopefully towards Thanksgiving.

Is the gurgling indicative of any escalation? The feeling of gas and tightness in my sides and back may have just been sore lats, but I have still heard occasional gurgling sounds from hernia area.

What type of hernia do you have?
If you have an indirect hernia, then mesh should not be used.
If you are skinny then the risk for pain after a mesh repair is higher.

Well my reply to Good Intentions must have been flagged because i tried to edit out emoji. TY for reply GI, Still exploring. Glad to find some more resources here. Basically was saying looking to find an experienced specialist that focuses on cash payment. Will add Ohio hernia center to my list thanks to the forum here. Any experiences w/ Dr Kravitz in MD? Did not find his name in a search of site. How about Surgery Center of Oklahoma?
