Hi, newbie here to the wonderful world of hernias 🙂 69 year old senior athlete. Very very physically active until the hernias, maybe too active? Just diagnosed/confirmed that I have an inguinal hernia, described small to moderate, golf ball sized. Dr also found an umbilical cord area hernia which didn’t bother me at all but was told it could grow in futre so maybe better to fix it too, at the same time.
My likely choice after researching was the Desarda technique (non-mesh) BUT just found another strong possibility. The Desarda first seemed without negatives but got an opinion that it relies on a strong external oblique aponeurosis to serve as a patch for the inguinal floor (I found that previously). The additional info was that sometimes the surgeon gets in there and finds a weak or torn one, which makes for a much less successful outcome (hadn’t thought about the what if)
    — any experience with a robotic repair WITH Ovitex 95% absorbable suture hybrid mesh???
Robotic seems to help with minimal recovery and Ovitex 95% absorbs and it does not rely on condition of your “innards”.

Any experience with this Ovitex with robotic technique? It seems like it very well might be the best of both methods.
    Thank you

I am appalled at the difficulty in finding something other than traditional mesh surgery ??????
Seems like only a handful in the US 🙁

Minnbobber I just dug into what Ovitex is and it does not appear to be a resorbable or absorbable material. It uses sheep stomach along with polypropylene. The material stays in the body, it’s not absorbed. It’s just not synthesized like polypropylene.

“Reinforced BioScaffolds (RBSs; OviTex, TELA Bio) are a new category of hernia repair devices [10], which were introduced to the market in July of 2016. RBSs are purposefully designed for hernia repair and abdominal wall reconstruction and are constructed by embroidering layers of biologic material derived from ovine (sheep) rumen with polymer. “

Hi there! Welcome to our Forum.
Ovitex offers a hybrid mesh. I use it in patients who are poor candidates for synthetic mesh but require mesh repair. I have had excellent results with it. It is not currently standard for inguinal hernia repair.

Thanks, to me the hybrid 95% resorbable mesh seemed like a much better option. For a senior athlete, would you opt for synthetic mesh OR a hybrid 95% resorbable?
?? With chronic pain case problems, is it more likely caused by tacking in the mesh vs sewing it in??

At home it looks like I have found a daVinci assisted, synthetic mesh, sewn into place. How does that stack up?

Surgeon messaged that they don’t use Ovitex as too expensive and results/studies have been funded by Ovitex maker so
    more experience is needed.
    How expensive is Ovitex?
Is it worth it as it sounds superior except for cost?

    Thanks

Is there any meaningful difference for mesh placed behind the abdominal wall vs over the hole/outside the abdominal wall?

There are a whole lot of variables going on, it seems.

Is there a mesh like this that is 100% absorbable and still effective for groin hernia?

Perhaps an absorbable mesh that is made of different absorbable materials that absorb at different rates, maybe with a slower absorbing lattice to reinforce the repair strongly initially while native tissue growth occurs to hold the repair long term?

Is there substantial ongoing research on this kind of thing?
