A global survey of hernia repair methods
Here is a look at what’s being reported as happening around the world. It results from an informal survey, so it’s different from the results derived from something like the ACHQC, although there is some overlap.

Method
A questionnaire-based survey on Survey Monkey® was created, and the link was shared freely on various social media platforms, personal email network of authors and email to members of the endorsed organisations, which include British Hernia Society (BHS), The Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society (TUGSS), and Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative (ACHQC).

Results
A total of 1014 surgeons from 81 countries completed the survey. Open and laparoscopic approaches were equally preferred (43% and 47% respectively).…
Repair with a mesh was preferred by 98% of the surgeons and synthetic monofilament light weight mesh with large pores was the most common choice. Lichtenstein repair was the most favoured open mesh repair technique (90%), while Shouldice repair was the favoured non-mesh repair technique. The risk of chronic groin pain was quoted as 5% after open repair and, 1% after minimally invasive repair. Only 10% of surgeons preferred open repair with local anaesthesia.

I couldn’t find a link to the full text from the BJS. But I did just find that it had already been published in Hernia, in June. Still a pay-per-view for the full article.
I wonder if they chose the GLACIER acronym as an acknowledgement of the slow pace of progress in the field.

Yes, have to keep in mind this is an online convenience sample and not to be taken as representative of all surgeons or hernia specialists.
Worth a read, though it is really about collecting global perspectives on what is practised or believed vs. providing any evidence of what is ‘best’. About 44% of respondents were in Europe, 40% in SE Asia or Australia, 15% in the Americas, and 2% in Africa, and there was a fair bit of variation in years of experience and # of repairs performed.
There is a quite a lot of information compiled from the survey…I thought I could try to summarize it, but it is a bit much. In addition to demographic info, including surgeon experience and volume, it captured their preferences/opinions regarding: repair methods, type of mesh, sutures, fixation methods, treatment of nerves, anaesthesia, contraindications for repair types, complication rates, complication risks disclosed during consent process, and more.
