A thoughtful and insightful discussion about over-utilizing new techniques
Here is another interesting article under the topic of “Minimally Invasive Surgery”. Despite the misnomer they still use the name. It sounds good.
Even though the article is not focused directly on the use of mesh for hernia repair, the bulk of what they describe fits very well with the growth of mesh as a hernia repair material. Moving too fast, discovering problems, no evidence to help choose a proper path forward. Costing patients and society, in health and money, as a result of this over-exuberance.
It’s also fascinating to see how some of the same characters crop up, dancing around the main points with rationalization, but not really offering a better path forward. Not really taking a side. Dr. Voeller is a professor at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. So, he’s the guy teaching tomorrow’s surgeons how the world works. He does not offer thoughts on the state-of-the-art and how the problems are being addressed, even though he should be at the forefront, as a teacher. Disappointing. I’m still hoping to see one of these “thought leaders” stick their neck out and try to make things better.
