  • Colonoscopy and Hernia?

This is most likely a stupid question, but I am due for a colonoscopy and have an inguinal hernia. Is there any chance that they can puncture or make the hernia larger during the procedure? Also, the gas they put in you to see the colon – will it expand the hernia and make it permanently larger?

    Katherine:

I have had 2 routine colonoscopies since I was diagnosed with a left sided inguinal hernia. I had some concerns before the second colonoscopy because my hernia was larger. I did not have any complications from the procedures and they did not affect my hernia. For me the procedures were similar to the colonoscopy I had before I developed the hernia. I will say I did not enjoy the prep.

Actually a very good question and I get asked it regularly.

No, they cannot puncture the hernia. In few cases where you have a very large hernia and there is colon within the hernia, the hernia should be reduced prior to colonoscopy.

No, colonoscopy would not in any way affect the hernia.
