Excellent article about the reasons healthcare is the way it is
I started reading this article and thought that it was the best that I have seen about why surgeons have the “get ’em in, get ’em out” mentality regarding mesh implantation. Then I was surprised to see that Dr. Bruce Ramshaw was the author. He is the surgeon who said that “mesh is not the cause of chronic pain” and also would not take questions about choosing the best mesh at a past conference. He is a professor at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, working alongside Dr. Voeller, who thinks that the mesh problem is so big that it cannot be addressed, and Dr. Voeller is the President of the Foundation that collects donations from corporate interests for the Americas Hernia Society.
Aside from the web of intrigue, this article is well worth reading. It did not require a log-in when I opened it. I don’t know how change can be made, but at least the goal is getting more clearly defined. And this article will help people understand why their surgeons keep recommending procedures that are known to have high chronic pain rates.
