Obviously this article is off-topic in that it is not about hernia implants, it is about breast implants, but I find it to be relevant to discussion in other ways.

This quote in particular is interesting given the similarity in concerns from some hernia patients about problems with pain, scar tissue, and auto-immune issues:

“But long-standing questions about durability have never been resolved. The FDA’s own safety notices warn that as many as one in five women who receive breast implants will get them removed within a decade due to complications such as rupture, deflation and the painful contraction of scar tissue around the implant, known as capsular contracture.

Breast implants are also blamed by tens of thousands of patients, and a growing number of medical professionals, for a range of autoimmune-related ailments generally referred to as breast implant illness.”

Also I think it is noteworthy that, like the situation with vaginal mesh complications, it appears that women are incredibly effective at organizing to raise awareness about problems with implants that negatively impact their health. Perhaps there are lessons to learn here?
