• Five Months post-op report, and a question about lifestyle

    Merry Christmas everyone.

I’m a 25 year old male, about 180 lbs. On July 1st of 2019 I had surgery on a left indirect inguinal hernia. It was, according to the surgical notes, a laparoscopic total extraperitoneal left indirect inguinal hernia repair with mesh. The mesh used is ProGrip, although a company name or specific kind is not mentioned. The mesh was implanted, I believe, inside the abdomen (I could always post the surgical notes later if needed), and the mesh’s dimensions are 15cm x 10cm.

On December 26th of 2019, I’m back at the gym, doing everything I used to. Of course I’ve had to start from scratch, but I’m able to live the life I was. I’m *almost* back to 100%. I did some calisthenic core exercises this week and now there’s aching around the groin, but it’s nothing debilitating and it’s ignorable. I’m able to wear a belt as tight as I need with almost no pain at all.

Now, I did have a question, and I’ll tag drtowfigh considering a doctor could maybe answer this best.

Before my hernia surgery, I was training for the US Army. I wanted to be an Infantryman. So, a lot of marching over long distances carrying heavy loads on one’s back, and that’s just the basic training. What’s the outlook for living such a lifestyle after a hernia surgery? Would it be recommended that I don’t “play with fire”, so to speak, and not pursue that? Does anyone know of anybody else who had hernia surgery and then lived an intensely-active lifestyle like that afterwards successfully? I’d like to hear people’s opinions on this.

The hope is that all patients who have hernia surgery can then lead a normal life, including serving their country, no matter how physically taxing.

The reality is not everyone fairs well. If you’ve done fine at 1 year, chances are you will have no problems in the future and recurrence risk is under 1%. We just don’t have any way to predict who will do well and who won’t.

Here is a topic on the site, linked below, from someone who had Progrip implanted then ~9 months later started having discomfort. But he is still fully functional and very active. I put a link in the Topic to a different forum that has accounts from many people who’ve had a wide variety of experiences. There is not way to predict who will have problems and who will not. If I were in your situation I would just go out and do what you expect to have to do and see what happens. It’s only been 6 months for you though and the Progrip has 40% absorbable material that takes months, apparently, to fully absorb. Long term results from Progrip are undocumented so you’re on your own as far as discovering how it will work out. Nobody can tell you with any verifiable data what will happen. It’s just the way things are in the hernia repair field today.

    Good luck.
