Hi All,

5 months back, I was injured. One of the injuries are Hernia and Hip Labrum tear. I got a MRI done, which confirmed Hip Labrum tear. I went to surgeon, he said , I have a inguinal groin hernia on both sides. I really want to make sure, if there is hernia or not. I went to Urologist and he said, there is hernia

I have pain in hip and groin while i am walking or standing.

I am based in NY/NJ. My insurance plan is Empire BCBS

I have read a lot in forums about Mesh and Non Mesh. However, i am still not sure, which Surgey options would be better Mesh or No- mesh.

    My Concerns:-

    – Do i need to take 2nd opinion with different doctors/surgeons, if there is hernia or not before surgery is performed. If yes, which doctors or test can confirm hernia?

    – if i go with non-mesh surgery. which non mesh surgery is good i.e., Dasedara or ShouldIce

    – if i go with mesh surgery. I see there are many options with Mesh surgery too. Can you advise which Mesh surgery will be good.

    – Can you advise, which options are good i.e., open, laparoscopic keyhole, robotic surgery…etc.

    – Any surgeons or hernia centers recommended in NY/NJ (preferred) or outside (if recommended).

Any advise for Hernia surgery options and surgeons that has minimal Re-occurrence or no pain post surgery.

    Kindly advise.

    Many thanks for your advise

Many thanks for the advise .

I used to be very athletic before the injury. However, the injury happened while working at my house backyard and lifting something very heavy for long period of time. I experienced severe pain the next day.

I went to the ER and had CT scan and the ER could not diagnose anything. After 1 month or so, with multiple doctors, i was diagnosed with Hip Labrum tear (MRI) and Ingunial Hernia on both sides (Surgeon and then Urologist). I also got an ultrasound to find hernia but the ultrasound technician could not find the Hernia.

After the injury, i continue riding the bike slowly as nothing was diagnosed after my visit to ER. I stopped the biking after 1 month of the injury.

Many thanks , i will consult a sports surgeon?

Any advise, if i should go for Mesh or No-mesh surgery. if Non mesh then Dasdera or Should-Ice. If Mesh (tension free, laparoscopic)

    Any more suggestions, please advise.

    Thanks

Can you explain your injury more and what happened? How were you diagnosed with the hernia and labrum tear? Do you have pain?

Most surgeons can feel most hernias, but not all hernias can be felt on exam. If there is doubt about a hernia diagnosis, usually an ultrasound is helpful.

If the injury is related to athletic activity or if athletics are a major part of your life, Good intentions makes very valid points, and you may want to seek out an athletic specialist. Dr William Meyers has a clinic that handles these type of athletic injuries and is located in Philadelphia.

Your best bet is to do your own research, and speak with a surgeon or several, discuss your questions, concerns, and expectations.

A few names for New York surgeons:

    – Dr Samer Sbayi in Long Island, New York does Shouldice repair which is the gold standard non-mesh repair

    – Dr Brian Jacob in NYC does laparoscopic repair and robotic surgery

    – Dr Steven Goldstein is also in NY and sometimes participates in these forums

There are certainly other skilled and talented surgeons in the NYC area, but those are who I can think of off the top of my head as they are names that have come up on these forums before.

Best of luck, keep us updated on your case and decision making.

Was your injury sports-related? Are you athletic? Consider seeing Dr. Meyers at the Vincera Institute. He does labrum repairs and hernia repair. He specializes in sports medicine. My one big mistake in life, so far, was having my hernia repaired by the main-stream methods. I was very athletic and should have put extra effort in to finding a doctor who knows athletes.

I’m not sure that a layperson can really make a good choice based on method-name alone. I would focus on finding a proven surgeon.

    Good luck.
