Mesh removal followed by mesh placement video – mesh on mesh on mesh
Here’s another recent video that shows what some surgeons have to deal with. This patient apparently had three pieces of mesh placed in attempts to repair a recurrent incisional hernia. Dr. Towfigh has said in the past that mesh is never placed on top of existing mesh but that does not appear to be the case here, it looks like each recurrence just had another piece of mesh placed, without removing the old piece. You can clearly see at least two old pieces of mesh being removed in the video. The preamble suggests that there were three.
It all started with an open appendectomy. He got eight years out of the first mesh, apparently.
Anyway, the video is interesting to watch, you can see what looks a crumpled up old Gore product with titanium spiral tacks visible and an intact mesh that must have moved, plus the large hernia sac and its contents. In the middle is an odd mesh, Surgimesh, a non-woven product. It’s another video showing what robotics can do.
