  • Pain after 10 days of umbilical hernia laparoscopy

    Hi

I have done umbilical and supraumbilical hernia laparoscopic surgery with Mesh 10 days ago

The site of incision is quite clear with no signs of any leak or problem but I am still suffering from pain and burning in the abdomen area so when I stand and keep walking a little I have pain in site and tenderness… the doctor says all is ok and I will get better by more time so based on your previous experience… is that normal to have such pain and tender after 10 days … and when is the pain expected to be reduced to get back to normal basic activities

    Thanks for help and support

by the way I have done with same above operation repair with mesh in right inguinal and it is ok and there is NO burning pain as per the umbilical site

I would find out the type of material used for the first repair to see if there is a difference. Compare the operation that worked with the one that is not.

I suggest either following your surgeon’s or advice or get a second opinion from a hernia specialist.

    Hi

I have done umbilical and inguinal hernia by laprascopy since 2 weeks now … the incision site is clear and no swelling but still have almost continuous medium pain and burning sensation in the abdomen which becomes very sensitive even to touch … also since 3 days I have pain in the testicles and it hurts when I touch them firmly … so what do you think is the problem … my surgeon say it need more time but I feel horrible since 2 weeks and suspect that may be something wrong … like mesh irritates the site and nerves … so please advise … shall I wait and suffer more and for how long ? Or shall I ask the surgeon to remove the mesh or that us too early to decide … your help and support is highly appreciated

Many Thanks and waiting your detailed reply

Everyone is a bit different. If local injection helps, then that’s the best first step. In severe cases, I remove and redo the repair.

    Thanks a lot

Wearing a binder may take some pressure off. Your symptoms sound like the repair may be a bit tight. Hard to judge without examining you.

    Thank you

so if the repair is a bit tight then it will take more time to heal or it might need intervention and how to solve it

Ok Great … I will wait 1 week and hope it gets better … In the meantime I will use ice and about local anesthetic… what do you recommend ? can I use lidocaine cream ?

i notice that when I press my hand a little on the site then pain is reduced a little so do you recommend wearing a hernia belt

Thanks a lot and have a great day

Wait another week. If it’s still too much, then seek consultation from your surgeon and consider a second opinion if you’re not satisfied with answers. Local anesthetic into the areas of pain can help. Meanwhile, ice!

Thanks alot for your reply drtowfigh … so what can I do now … shall I wait some days and see if the pain gets better and if not shall I consult my doctor again and ask him about stated points … how can I verify if there is a real problem like too tight repair or it just need more time to recover and if it is too tight repair then how to solve it

by the way I have done with same above operation repair with mesh in right inguinal and it is ok and there is NO burning pain as per the umbilical site

again … I appreciate your support and help

Depends on the technique for the repair. Usually, we recommend transfascial sutures. If these are placed too tight, you can have severe pain at the areas of the knots. If the mesh is placed taut that can also cause pain and pulling. The burning may be related to mesh or to the transfascial suturing of the mesh.

laparoscopic ventral abdominal wall hernia repairs tend to be more painful than inguinal hernia repairs.

a consultation by a hernia specialist can help determine if your pain is part of the recovery or related to a too tight repair.
