Painless throbbing years after mesh repair
Has anyone ever heard of or experienced the following?
I had left side inguinal hernia repair surgery with mesh in the summer of 2014 at age 49 in The Bay Area with just the usual post op recovery and no complications. I also had identical right side right surgery in 2003. I’ve since retired and moved to Southeast Asia. I’m active in the gym three times a week with weights and cardio. Yesterday I started experiencing painless throbbing in the left side hernia repair area with some gurgling. It seems identical to some painless symptoms I had before each surgery. Since the surgery I’ve only had one episode of some minor groin pain after lunges but nothing since.
Is it possible for symptoms like this to re-appear out of nowhere almost four years later? And what type of doctor would be best to approach with that if they continue? We’re on “pay as you” so I’d prefer avoiding hospitals but healthcare is very inexpensive in SE Asia so I’d go if I need to. Thanks in advance

Have you been checked for hernia recurrence? Perhaps get an ultrasound with valsava done on the location of the throbbing.
Singapore publicly states the prices of procedures, and there’s another recent thread on these forums about Dr Kang in South Korea who performs hernia surgeries. If you have symptoms similar to a hernia, getting checked for recurrence seems like a good first step.

Four years is not that long. Nerve regeneration and growth will continue, probably forever. Even proponents of mesh will acknowledge that the body will be “working” on the mesh as long as it is there, as a foreign body. Whether for good, tissue ingrowth to hold it in place, or bad, constant inflammation. I am aware of at least one person who had some form of mesh implanted many years before a second repair on the other side, and the more recent repair caused problems, while the old repair was fine. The materials and techniques are constantly changing, often for unclear reasons, so what you had done in 2003 might not really be “identical” to what you had in 2014. You haven’t supplied any details beyond “mesh” either. That doesn’t tell much.
Look for Dr. Kang’s posts on this site. He seems to understand the field. He might know somebody that can help. He is based in South Korea.
