Hi.
I was hoping someone could advise me..
I had my first hernia repair in February 2018,it was an epigastric, and It was repaired without mesh, my recovery went well, with only a small scar.
Then late in that same year whilst painting my toenails, I had a severe pain, and after a gp visit and a scan they found 2 more hernias, I was told it would be repaired by mesh this time and I had the surgery in March of this year, the surgeon visited me after the surgery and I was told they dident use the mesh as he dident feel it was necessary, the scar was much bigger this time and has left a small bulge, recovery was long and I said never again!
Well this week whilst stretching in the bath, the awful pain was back, and I know it’s another one, the pain is similar to before, saw my gp yesterday, but she couldent feel anything, and told me to come back if things dident improve and I’d be refereed for another scan, I’m still in pain, so will go back.
My question here is will they Want to operate again? It’s obvious this surgery isent working, and to go through it all again for no longer than 6 months, would the mesh of been more successful.. I was told the skin is very thin in this area.
Im a 52 year old healthy female, and this is affecting my life now, hope someone can advise, thanks

quote Dee:

I’ve had a no mesh repair twice now, the thought of more surgery is alarming, why does this keep happening and how can I avoid it happening again.

Who did the first two repairs?

After weeks of pain, I finally had an ultra sound scan today, it showed 2 bigger hernias one seemed to have fluid around it, the other is showing the bowel trying to push through, I’m not due to see my consultant till next month, but I’m hoping to see my Gp tomorrow and she can speed things up for me, the worry here is that it will strangle, I’ve had a no mesh repair twice now, the thought of more surgery is alarming, why does this keep happening and how can I avoid it happening again.

My tummy is very itchy is this normal, and I feel quite nauseated today, my tummy is protruding, I’m struggling to do my job, and this is now massively affecting my day to day life.

Dee – I am so sorry you are in the midst of dealing with this situation. Recurrent hernias are defeating as well as painful. Just as Dr. Towfigh recommended – I would really like to encourage you to consult a true hernia specialist. I endured 6 hernia surgeries with the same surgeons before seeking the help of a hernia specialist (I see Dr. Heniford). I genuinely regret not seeking specialized attention earlier on. Please keep me posted on your situation. Good luck!

If You considering mesh that possibly the only choice you have ..i would do fly to do it only with drtowfigh she is master in female anatomy and does a lot sophisticated cases

Thank you both so much for your replies.
I saw my gp last week and she was oh you’ve pulled a muscle.. I can’t feel anything.. But said she could feel a gap, and to come back if no better, I’ve been in pain ever since and I’ve another appointment this afternoon.
I was told after the birth of my daughter 20 years ago that my gap hadn’t closed so was sent for physio, I was told there was an improvement but wasent fully closed..
Is this the diastis recti you mention, as nobody has mentioned this at the time of my last hernia repairs.
How is this detected, will a scan show it or is it a physical examination?
After 2 repairs and thinking I was pain free as you can imagine I’m quite devastated at having more surgery, but the options either way are pain..
My recovery last time took weeks, the scar is quite big..
And it bulges, I feel if I was given a scan it would show more hernias, and I would be listened to, I know my body now, I feel nausea and back pain also.
But with Christmas fast approaching I’m looking at a long wait to be seen.
Thank you once again, I’m looking at my 3rd year of this now, I just don’t know what’s best anymore

Sounds like a recurrence from the tissue repair. If so, most likely they will have to operate on you again and it would be best to use mesh this time around.

Unless it is because of a diastasis recti then they may still be able to do a tissue repair after they repair your diastasis recti but that doesn’t sound smart at all. If it’s a recurrence, the abdominal wall is already so weak especially from being sutured and coming undone.

Some thoughts:
– laparoscopic repair with mesh is the best outcome for these problems
– you may have a diastasis recti which is contributing to the failures of the two repairs

See a hernia specialist. Your care needs to be tailored to best meet your needs.
