Post op ilionguinal neurectomy
My fiance had laprascopic inguinal hernia mesh surgery back in 2008 on his left scrotum. August 2015 He got hurt at work lifting two 70lbs film rolls. We have been to 10 different doctors trying to figure out what and why he was in so much pain. The last doctor he is seeing is a hernia specialist and he recently did exploratory surgery on him 11 days ago. He said the mesh looked perfect and there was no reoccuring hernia but he did however do a neurectomy on one of his nerves. Week 1 his pain was moderate now on week 2 it has intensified. He’s complaining of left lower abdomen pain that goes to his ankles. His left testicle has swelled up larger and is hanging lower. His penis is swollen and he complains it hurts as well. He can barely put pressure on his left leg. I don’t know what to do for him and I want to know why he is hurting worse then he was on week 1?

So he had his post op today. They are sending him back to pain management and wants to see him back at the hernia center in a month. The doctor told him he would have pain that should go away for long. Said the neurectomy would cause hypersensitive nerves. Hoping he has relief soon so he can go back to work as we are financially struggling and are over our head in hospital bills and have 3 small children.

I’m no doctor but I am a neurectomy patient. Stupid option in my opinion.
My back pain intensified after triple neurectomy, listen to the people who had neurectomeis, please. The reason the pain goes down to his ankles is because the nerve goes to the spine around the L1-L3 weaking it causing it to not be as strong and can collapse or compress disc space and cause disc irritation and tremendous weakness. You weaken those abdominal muscles and cut nerves your spine lacks support, compression sets in,,, it’s so obvious why would a doctor not recognize that? Seems like basic physiology to me.
Weaken the front the back goes out, cut a nerve that goes to the spine and you weaken that muscle…the hip bone is connected to the knee bone.. however the song goes. -

We have been to doctor after doctor with medical bills piling up on us. He’s had ultrasounds, ct scans and nerve blocks. Every doctor has their own opinions and some seem to me only wanted money and didn’t care. Its been a battle everyday. I know his pain is real I can see it. And to have one doctor say “I know your not faking it now” blows my mind. He just wants to be better not workers comp (although it would be nice to get our money back) He goes back to the doctor for post op Monday so we’ll see how that goes..

I am really sorry to hear that.
I just want to point out on something that might not be in focus due to post-op complications. In general, when there is groin pain after any excessive physical activity it is highly recommended to get at least couple opinions from experienced surgeons. Obviously, one should be hernia specialist while another opinion should come from the surgeon who is experienced with so called “sport hernia” injuries. These types of traumas typically involve groin muscle tears without protrusion of intestines and bulge. Unfortunately, there is relatively small number of general surgeons who have wide experience with such traumas. Did your surgeon look at all the groin tendons and muscles that are typically not involved witn true hernia symptoms? Have you discussed this “sports hernia” topic with him/her? Hopefully, swelling issues will be addressed and go away within short time frame. If the groin pain will stay for longer than 3 months (doctors may correct me if I am wrong with this “rule”) after the surgery then you may want to consult with a surgeon who is experienced in this field (not necessarily from your local region/state).

He didn’t have pain down to his ankle til after his neurectomy. Its his whole left leg that hurts since his surgery. He is still very swollen in his groin and private area. Before his surgery he has pain in his lower left abdomen to his groin and testicles due to injury at work but the doctor said his mesh looked fine and had no reoccurring hernia. We just can’t pin point exactly why he is having much pain and the doctor just took a shot on clipping one of his nerves.

Just to give some perspective:
There is no hernia-related pain that radiates down to the ankle. That is usually a back issue, so don’t forget to make sure everything from the back has been worked up.
Usually, hernia-related pain after surgery so many years ago (2008), is related to a hernia recurrence.
Now that he has recovered from the neurectomy and exploration surgery, how are his symptoms? I assume the swelling, etc., has improved.

Definitely doing our research. I’ve heard a lot of postives on having it removed. My fiance is only 32 and this has just brought him down on life. We are willing to do anything. Thanks so much

Oh ok I would definitely do research on removing the mesh and talk to others who has had it removed, I hear it’s risky due to the nerves that’s attached which is quite scary. I’m thinking about removal as well.

I am not sure at this moment what kind but I do know that his doctor said the next step if this surgery he just had didn’t work is that he is going to remove the mesh.

Sorry to hear that, it is definitely devastating. Do you know what type of mesh they implanted? I had to have a 2nd surgery because the mesh was floating and folded.

Its so frustrating. He had his hernia surgery 8 years ago no problems. He didn’t start hurting until he picked heavy equipment up at work back in 2015. Workers comp hasn’t paid a dime. No reoccurring hernia or folded mesh. They couldn’t figure out why he was hurting so they did neurectomy only to make his pain worse!!

I had triple neurectomy which was all 3 nerves and it has caused me more pain that I was in before and the mesh still painful. I usually use an ice pack which helps sometimes.
