The financial industry has a number of different “measures of risk” including standard deviation of returns, skewness, value at risk (VAR), probability of draw-down, among many others. The industry also has various ways to quantify investors’ attitudes towards risk: risk aversion parameters, utility functions, surveys, etc.. Combined, measures of risk and an attitudes towards risk are use tailor investment strategies for particular investors.

Question 1: Do doctors receive any training at all in order to help them quantify the risks of the procedures they perform and to help them tailor their recommendations for patients’ attitudes towards risks?

I have never been to a SAGES conference. But, I have listened to many SAGES conference presentations on YouTube. From these videos, I get the impression that the vast majority of SAGES members are “pro-mesh” in the sense that they think that the best way to fix any hernia is to use some sort of mesh.

Question 2: Do doctors feel that the atmosphere within the SAGES community is accepting of those who hold an opposing view (i.e., a view that believes that mesh is not always, and maybe not ever, the best way to repair a hernia)?
