  • Weight gain months after hernia repair

    hi all,
following a hernia repair operation about six months ago, I have gain weight, only around the abdominal area. I had CT scans and my consultant informed me that all is fine.
however, within these months, I have jumped from a 32” waist to a 36”.
i eat very little and don’t drink alcohol. I should add that I was treated for perianal Chrones which is now fine. I take Mercaptupurine daily (50mg).
    Thanks for your help

    Thank you for your reply…..
i should explain the history here. In an attempt to cure my perianal Chrones, my consultant decided to insert a reversible stoma bag, roughly adjacent to my navel. I had the stoma bag for over two years until it was decided to remove the stoma bag as the problem had been solved and the stoma bag had done sits job.
Soon after, I noticed a bulge at the stoma site. The surgeon then decided to remedy this by inserting a mesh at the stoma/hernia site.
After six months however, the wound at the incision point was not healing. Then decided to re-operate. During the operation, it was discovered that the stomach mussels had netted together, therefore the mesh was no longer required. They also concluded that the mesh had also caused an infection which prevented the wound to to heal.
This procedure was carried out about 9 months ago and since then the abdominal weight gain started to appear.
I have tried exercise, diet, everything but the mid-drift bulge is not going away.
Like you, the area of bulging is hard and does not appear to be body fat. Apart from my mid-drift, I am slim…anyway, my body looks disproportionate. Thank you for reading…

I gained a bulge just below my navel extending a few inches on either side, after my laparoscopic surgery. It doesn’t seem to be fat, just a stiff layer of tissue, almost like some sort of protective measure that the body takes after being injured. Even my physician noticed in when I went in for a physical, he poked at it like it didn’t belong. It doesn’t seem to follow weight gain or loss with the rest of my body either. I assumed it was a side effect of the large area of dissection from my TEP procedure. It’s still there even after mesh removal.

What type of hernia did you have repaired, and what procedure and material was used?
