Why would a resected nerve (as in neurectomy) cause bulging? Wouldn’t this be an indication that the nerve had some motor function?

Also would a resected or cut nerve, or a break in the nerve from damage, or separation of a nerve by any means be classified as a neurectomy?

    Thank You, JG

What surgeon performed your orchiectomy? If it was not Dr. Chen did he advise for/against this procedure? Why would you have not had Dr. Chen perform this procedure as well and stay with the same surgeon?

When you go to the gym what type of workouts are you doing. Since the workouts seems to make the pain worse, I was curious as to what exercises you are doing?

    Regards, JG

Sorry you have to suffer like this.

Not that you have not tried this already but apply ice on the burning area it should help temporarily and does not cost anything and wont harm you. Also I have had really good luck with Aspercreme with Lidocaine, which essentially is straight Lidocaine (numbing agent). try to keep as positive as possible as your mental state will influence how you perceive the pain.

Time will help you it is just long and difficult. Keep busy, Hang in there. You are not alone.

From MY experience when a nerve block is done it almost can’t help but make you feel better at least for a day from the anesthetic alone. If you have a combo anesthetic/anti-inflammatory then the anti-inflammatory will work (usually for a period of time) if the cause of pain is other than nerve pain. I have heard a lot of negative results regarding problems after spermatic cord denervation. Be very careful moving forward with further surgeries.

    Good Luck

Regarding the GFN Neurectomy, in usual cases will the patient know right away if the procedure was effective? What is the typical recovery period for this operation?

Did Dr Chen tell you the expected recovery time for the Neurectomy? Can you describe what you feel like at this early stage in your recovery, areas of Pain/Numbness/Burning Etc.? In my previous post I stated that I thought you should wait from here a good amount of time to see how you heal. I am concerned if you move to quickly and possibly complicate matters. I hope you feel better soon.

Dr. Towfigh – Would this patient have been better off with an Open GFN Neurectomy? Do the benefits of Neurectomy present immediately or is early stage pain/burning a sign of failure?

    Thank you

Please keep us informed as to your progress from the GF Neurectomy. I along with others a very interested in the long term outcome of this procedure. I wish you luck and would advise to wait as long as you can before moving to quickly into your next surgery.

I had my Laparoscopically implanted mesh removed. There are no guarantees that every bit of the mesh can be removed. There is no guarantees that a nerve or another part of your anatomy will not get damaged. You need to see the most experienced and reputable surgeon possible to remove your mesh. Often times mesh removal alone will not work and triple a neurectomy with mesh removal is more likely to yield better results. Either way it is a chance you have to take verses the pain your in now. I would wait as long as possible. Often times pain subsides or becomes manageable even resolves with time.

    Good Luck JG

    Swollen Groin after Mesh Removal

    Hi Dr Towfigh

Let me start by saying Thank You very much for staying with my situation. I had an MRI done last Friday 12-18-15 and am awaiting the results. I am consulting with a local Hernia specialist in Massachusetts Dr Peter Lydon who is trying to help me. I still want to get copies of the MRI and my recent ultrasound and send them to you if you would like. I do believe my case is somewhat unique as I had Lap Mesh Removed via Open surgery. Also I am hoping if I ever make it through this half way in one piece that maybe my experience will help someone else.

I am doing a little better in the last few weeks but I also have developed some different and unusual pains in my scrotum but not in my testicle. The pain seems to radiate along the side of my Scrotum almost as far down to my anus and felt like a tightening for a few days and then burning for about 2 weeks off and on. Now seems tight again and sometimes itchy feeling. This new pain is also worrisome due to the onset of symptoms 5 Months post op and where the new pain is located?

Tomorrow I will be six months to the day and i still have the groin swelling as well which has gone down very little. as far as good news the odd and random shooting type pains in various parts of my upper thigh are either gone or have subsided substantially.

I must admit that I am very concerned with permanent nerve damage and or another hernia, if so this would have to be addressed by a competent surgeon experienced in this field. I will keep you posted once the test results are in this week. This has been extremely difficult for me and I am hoping in time things get even a little better.

It helps getting support and advice from you and I and the other forum members are extremely grateful.

    Jim

    Swollen Groin after Mesh Removal

    Dr Towfigh

I had the ultrasound done to determine if fluid was the cause of the swelling in my groin. The ultrasound came back negative and did not show any fluid accumulation? (Something is accumulated in there?) Today marks 20 weeks since my mesh removal. I am extremely concerned with the swelling in my groin. Although the swelling has gone down some what I am still very swollen and this also causes a lot of discomfort especially in the sitting position which i do all day long at my job. I am still experiencing a fair amount of off and on pain in the entire groin area as well with odd tightness/pains in various places in my thigh however this is intermittent and does not happen every day, Any further advise would be greatly appreciated. It just seems unusual to me that there is no logical explanation as to the cause and/or resolution of my problem other than time? If you are interested i can send you the Ultrasound and I would like to know what further testing or actions you think I should have done. I feel like this swelling is my main issue and most of the cause of my current pain issues.

    Thanks in advance JG

    Dr Towfigh

I am having the Ultrasound tomorrow. I will keep you informed as to the results. Hopefully this will help to determine the cause of the persistent swelling. I did have a hernia on my left side it was repaired at the same time as the right side (now removed right side mesh) I have not experienced any problems on that side. I want to thank you again for helping me with your sound information and recommendations. JG

    Swollen Groin after Mesh Removal

    Hi Dr. Towfigh

I appreciate the added response as I am very concerned with the swelling and what to do about it.

To answer your question.. The right side where my mesh was removed did not reveal a hernia so there was no additional repair. I was not even aware that I had a hernia on this side at the time of the initial hernia repair with mesh.

I spoke with the surgeon who removed my mesh and he said he thinks it is an Edema. He has not recommended a specific treatment however per your recommendation I will have an ultrasound done to see what it may reveal.

It is difficult for me right now since the operating surgeon is far away from where I live.

I also have some odd pains in my thigh feels like a tightening down the thigh to the knee sometimes on my inner thigh but sometimes in the front thigh area. This is not a pins and needles or burning sensation but a very strange pulling yet somewhat painful feeling. It is also sporadic but sitting I think aggravates it.

This website allows me to gather more information and suggestions so that I can recover optimally. Even the recovery process is very scary. All help is welcome.

    Thanks JG

    Swollen Groin after Mesh Removal

The pains and tightness from the mesh are gone. I have some new pains that are now getting better with time particularly in my lower most groin area just above my penis and about an inch or so from the mid-line and occasional weird feelings in my thigh. I will know more in time. Really confused with the swollen area but the swelling does not seem to contribute to any pain oddly enough?

    Swollen Groin after Mesh Removal

I had the surgery done by Dr Petersen in Nevada. Yes this was an extreme measure I took but after writhing in pain for a year I had to take a chance. I did try Narcotics, Nsaids, Neurontin, Depo-Medrol Injections, Lidocaine patches, Tens Therapy to no real help. All these modalities never addressed the Cause.

Do you think the swelling in my groin is fluid/ If so do you think it will resolve overtime?

    Thanks

So is it safe to say that the Mesh can be removed without significant damage to the transversalis fascia?

Also what type of potential damage can happen in regards to the Nerves upon removal of mesh? Givin the TEP method are the nerves in direct contact with the mesh?
