DrBrown , the surgical report says the ilioinguinal nerve was “seen coursing inferiorly to the inguinal canal and was preserved inferiorly”. Up until the burning, the only pain issue that’s been constant was the testicular pain, specifically it has been uncomfortable at the top/rear..any pressure is uncomfortable.
Over the past few days the pain has changed…originally it was burning a couple inches to the side of the incision, now the pain is most noticeable between the incision and my testicle. Hurts the most when I get up from sitting/laying down, lasts a couple minutes, then subsides.
Have an appointment next week with my surgeon to followup. If it gets worse before then I’m tempted to visit my GP.
BobbyO , thank you for starting this thread…how have you been doing?

I came to post a similar question and update my original thread. I’ve had pain above my testicle since my inguinal (recurrent) hernia was repaired in November. Comes and goes, irritating more than anything. Since a week ago, I have a pretty strong burning a couple inches to the side of my open repair. Skin is sensitive, burns like hell when I get up. Area had been numb…possibly things just “waking up”?

Dr Harris did my hernia repair late last year. Had a great experience. He was upfront about the challenge (recurrent hernia w/mesh) and outcome expectations. Feel free to reach out directly if you have any questions.

Here we are 10 weeks after surgery. Swelling is pretty much gone and you’d have to really look for the surgery scar. Kids brought home some type of “flu light” from school…given the amount of coughing I’ve done the past week, it’s a miracle I didn’t have a blow out lol.
The only complaint I have is my right testicle gets pissy. Well, again not really my testicle but the area above/behind it. I’ll have a week of nothing then it’s noticeable for a day or two. Not bad pain, just achy. Called the surgeons office a couple weeks back…doesn’t seem to be uncommon, especially with an open repair. But they did say to let them know if it continues. I have a work function in SoCal in a couple weeks, probably going to stop by and get it checked out.

Yesterday marked five weeks since surgery.
At this point I have no pain at the incision site and the swelling has gone down considerably. Still have some numbness, but it’s getting better as time passes. The only naggle is my surgical side testicle is still a bit tender. Wouldn’t call it pain necessarily, just a bit of occasional “hey I’m here” discomfort where (what I assume) the cord connects up to it.
Had an “Oh @%#” moment last week when the left side started hurting. If the other side has a recurrence, I’ll start playing the lottery cause I assumingely hit some crazy odds. Here’s to hoping there isn’t a “second recurrence” thread down the road 😮 (pain stopped a couple days later).
My surgeon was Dr.Todd Harris in Newport Beach.

MemberNovember 17, 2018 at 1:25 am in reply to: Recurrent Hernia Repaired – Couple Pain QuestionsUnfortunately I don’t have the details around the repair aside from what he told my wife (quickly identified the hernia and fixed me up). My incision is about three inches long. It’s more uncomfortable now than it was, but still nowhere near needing prescription pain meds. Even since this morning I seem to have more feeling down there…especially around the hernia side “berry”.
The only time my previous mesh has come into the conversation is in how he approached the repair. I’m guessing mesh was used this time as well. I’ll post updates as things progress, my followup is in a couple weeks…should have all the details after that.

Have put the robosurgery on hold. Wasn’t sure the rules in discussing specific doctors. Heading to SoCal for a business trip and plan to have a consult with a “hernia doc”. Unfortunately my insurance is out-of-network for my first choice. There is another one in OC that’s in-network, will follow up with them over the next few days.

The one thing that was consistent among all three surgeons was their saying “you have a hernia and I can fix it”. They know I have mesh but it raised no visible flags. Then I research it and the first dozen google hits all point to mesh lawsuits. Then you find forums with people looking for mesh removal doctors. How does one know when to remove mesh? During surgery to fix it? Have I just read too much and need to let the docs do their thing? These are probably what I’m looking to ask.
