i had an 8 mm inguinal hernia repaired via open surgery with mesh on 6/27/18. After numerous follow up visits to surgeon with complaints about the same burning sensation like the original hernia, a CT scan was ordered and showed a persistent/recurrent/residual hernia at the site of the original repair measuring 4 cm (40 mm). How does this happen so soon after original repair? I was advised to proceed with surgery on the original hernia as it was irreducible. The “new” hernia is five times the size of the original and is also irreducible. The CT showed a 5mm wall defect. Should I request to be referred to a hernia specialist? What is the timeframe I should expect to undergo surgery again? Will the second operation be more complex?

I am female. The burning I am experiencing is near the crease of my groin and thigh (near repair site). I hope you get answers soon.

I am having burning issues as well 6 weeks post op inguinal hernia repair.similar to preop symptoms. Just curious about the location of your symptoms. Mine are burning in the scrotum and penis. When I wake up in the morning burning is almost gone. 2 weeks ago I had a ct scan at the emergency hospital. Drs did not see a recurrence… thanks

Thank you so much for your response and your advice. I don’t want my options dictated by my insurance. I am in southwest Virginia but very willing to travel.

A hernia specialist seems like the way to go at this point. Your situation is not simple.

I would try to step outside of your insurance/medical system to see what your options are. By this I mean choose your next surgeon yourself. If you stay in the system you might or might not get a good surgeon. Many times referrals are chosen by somebody in the office just getting on to their computer and picking the first name they find, or somebody they know, or somebody within driving distance.

Post your general location and somebody can suggest someone. Many practices do not require referrals.
