Fascinating presentation about how laparoscopy might be increasing surgeries
I stumbled across this video describing how a very common surgery, appendectomy, was on the wane, decreasing due to the use of antibiotics and non-surgical methods, until, apparently, laparoscopic methods were developed. Very interesting, but disturbing. The author pulled from RCT’s and other studies at the end to try to show the rationale behind it but his argument ended with no real conclusion. It trails off, undefined. Basically, “it’s happening but nobody can really say why”.
It’s disturbing that the presenter can’t just say “we don’t know” or “maybe technology is driving unecessary procedures”, but instead rationalizes the rate of increasing laparoscopic appendectomies. Just draw rational conclusions from the data available.
On the other hand, the guy appears to be just some random person with a YouTube channel. There is no backgorund info on the guy. Like many YouTube “influencers”. But he does know how to find research papers to make an argument. He couldn’t win this one though.
