Hi: can anyone recommend a surgeon in/near the London area, UK? I am interested in surgeons who can do open with/without mesh or lap.

It is early days but I think I have a bilateral inguinal hernia although my GP wasn’t sure and has aranged an ultrasound. The right groin area does bulge at times but reduces if I lie down. The right groin area is quite numb, puffy and itchy. I have been diagnosed previously with IBS and PTSD and have a lot of gas in my digestive system and I have a lot of belching which I think is connected to groin bulging. I won’t go ahead with surgery unless I am sure I have a hernia and that surgery will improve things. Has anyone had similar symptoms? Any input from medics appreciated. Thanks.

I am curious if anyone here has experience with BioHernia? I read on this website that Dr. Muschaweck performs non-mesh hernia operations on many top football players. They also offer non-mesh hernia repairs which could be reimbursed by the NHS, but I would have to travel to Germany in that case. I made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Muschaweck in London next week. I will keep you updated on how the consultation went.

Dr Muschaweck is very well regarded in professional athlete circles for sports hernias, inguinal disruption, groin pain, and regular groin hernias. Presumably she sees mostly European patients but I do know that some US athletes fly over to Germany to see her as well. Based on her extensive experience she would likely be an excellent resource to consult with.

Let us know how it goes!

If you want some added details, here’s an (older) clip from a US TV program about sports injuries and Dr Muschaweck along with a patient of hers is interviewed, it’s geared towards athletic injuries but in the surgical segment they mention the patient had a real hernia as well.

Here’s another clip of Dr Muschaweck presenting at a global conference on groin pain:

Anyway, keep us updated on your experience and decision making.

The web site you linked was only just created, in 2018. Apparently, it’s not really clear what type of business it is. It seems to be a partnership of several surgeons.

    https://biohernia.com/en-gb/how-biohernia-works/

Somebody also recently posted that, apparently, Dr. Muschaweck had left her previous organization. Maybe she left to start this.

The web site is very impressive. It covers pretty much all of the issues often brought up when discussing hernia repair. The important links are at the bottom of the introductory page.

Very interested to hear how things turn out for you. Thanks for posting this.

I went to see a good hernia surgeon today. I do have a bilateral inguinal hernia (larger on rhs). I am leaning towards an open mesh repair, but going to take my time to consider options. I am still hopeful that natural healing is possible despite this being contrary to medical opinion. It’s hard to make an informed decision particularly as the information on line is quite anecdotal. It would be good tobe able to compare outcomes after 10 and 20 years say. My dad had a mesh repair in the early 90s and he is 91 now and says it has given him no problems. Intuitively it feels as if mesh would strengthen the repair. The other issue is that there are very few surgeons who do mesh free procedures which must tell you something, so options may be limited unless I travel. It’s good to have this forum to share on.

Your best bet is to see an expert for proper hernia diagnosis. As for hernia surgeons in the UK, there are many but you will likely have a harder time finding non-mesh repair, as is usual nowadays since fewer surgeons are trained on the techniques. A few potential leads:

The Gilmore Groin and Hernia Clinic I believe performs all hernia repair types, but you must inquire directly with them. They are in London.

Dr Ulrike Mushawek from Munich Germany is also occasionally performs surgery in UK at “WELLINGTON HOSPITAL’s PLATIN MEDICAL CENTRE (PMC)” according to her website. She is particularly well known in sports and athletic circles and performs many hernia repairs on professional athletes. She mostly does non-mesh repair, however.

Peter Jones of The South East England Hernia Clinic also apparently performs Shouldice hernia repairs in the UK, and might be reached at 01622 695533 if that contact information is up to date.

Surely there are many other regional experts in the UK, but that might offer some starting points. Best of luck to you, and keep us updated on your case and decision making.
