    Hello all,

you may have seen me posting on this forum. I’ll soon be 20 and I spent the last year of my life in chronic pain because of a faulty mesh repair with an Ethicon UHS.
I had given up any hope of getting this fixed after countless doctor’s visits and pointless treatments. In the end all it took was consulting a single true hernia expert, Dr. Conze in Munich.
In my experience it’s pointless to consult your original surgeon or other doctors who aren’t hernia experts, specifically on redo surgeries. They will simply reassure you that everything is fine or prescribe medications that barely treat the symptoms and don’t cure anything. The truth is that the mesh was fused to a nerve and the only possible treatment was to get it removed.

Do not be afraid of mesh removal. I had one of the meshes that’s hardest to remove (Ethicon UHS). It took Dr. Conze, who is possibly one of the best surgeons in this area, two and a half hours to get it all out and do a Shouldice repair. However he did it perfectly and it was worth it in the end. All my anatomical structures were preserved, in fact it feels more natural now than with the mesh in. I do have some numbness, because obviously it’s impossible to remove the mesh from the entangled nerve without damaging it. But I don’t even notice it unless I touch the affected area, and there’s a possibility that the sensation will come back. I’m back to running, cycling and lifting weights after just two months.

Find a specialist to treat you and be ready to travel and pay for it. There’s no better way to invest your money.

    Hi Ben999,

Thank you for sharing your story. It is good to hear from someone who had a positive outcome especially for those of us who may be contemplating mesh removal. I had mesh implanted for an inguinal hernia repair almost one year ago and have been having problems ever since. I am only 26 and the last year has been the most challenging mentally and physically for me. Your story gives me hope that I can go back to living mesh free and pain free.

Thank you for following up Ben999. Good to hear that you had a successful outcome. I also feel like I’m almost back to normal myself, although things are still changing, in a positive way. But the mesh and mesh removal site on my body is not my primary focus on waking every morning, anymore. It’s secondary, one year and four months after removal. I wake up thinking about what I can accomplish for the day instead of how much attention my problem will take.

Here is a link to the clinic who did the work for you. It looks like Dr. Muschaweck, well known for her work in this area, has passed the responsibility for her clinic on to Dr. Conze. It’s good to see that the clinic is still doing well.

    Good luck.
