Thanks for the messages. It was a standard open surgery with mesh, not sure of the type of mesh. The surgeon is very good to the best of my knowledge, he has done many of these procedures. He also does lap. procedures and offered to do mine with that technique. I considered lap. surgery but for various reasons I decided on open. I have learned that apparently, many people have pain afterward. Mine is not debilitating or anything, but it’s an annoyance. I’m wondering when you can assume its not going to get any better.

Jim-Thanks for sharing this. So crunches are not allowed? I wonder if easy, “bent-knee” crunches would be acceptable. How else can you strengthen your abs?

Very interesting question. I’m at nine months post open- IH surgery with mesh. I am a life-long runner, (used to be pretty competitive) but I was very cautious the first few months-no running at all, just walking. I am now doing @ 30 minutes easy, five or six days a week, and I also work on my feet most of the day (tourism). I have some sporadic pain and an almost constant feeling of tension in the surgical site. Not sure if the running contributes to it, because sometimes I have the feelings on days when I don’t run. I am willing to put up with a little pain as long as the procedure did what it was supposed to do, but I’m sure you will agree, it would be nice to be pain free after this much time. Hope you get some useful response to this.

Dog-No, maybe I wasn’t clear. I’m looking for long term information (not just 4-8 weeks) about what the patient can reasonably expect after standard open inguinal hernia surgery. Hard to find, but we need to know what can reasonably be expected at six months, and a year and so forth.

Good question. Slender people seem to have more sensitivity.

Good Intentions: Thank you for this. I believe you said your procedure was done laparoscopically? Do you suppose that made a difference in your case? From all I’ve heard, that is a complex procedure, with more chances of things going wrong than with “open”. I am planning on open surgery, with only local anesthesia-keeping things as basic as possible..

Thanks guys. I’ve been checking Runner’s World forums and others, the consensus of opinion seems to be pretty positive.

Thank you for this. I suppose at some point you h ave to assume the surgeon knows what he or she is doing.
